Dr Charlotte Atkin (BSc , MSc, DClinPsy)
Specialist Clinical Psychologist - Neurological Conditions, Physical Health, Mental Health , Learning Disabilities, Cognitive Strategies
As a Clinical Psychologist, I have several approaches to understand difficulties. But I believe therapy is built between two people, and so I spend a few sessions getting to know you, building a picture of how problems have developed, and what might keep them going. We’ll then have a plan to break unhelpful cycles or find ways to create positive change.
My main approaches are based in ACT (learning to accept difficulties, and still live a meaningful life alongside them) and CBT (learning strategies to change the way you think or act). However, we will decide the best approach for you, and integrate strategies where helpful!
My specialisms are in neurological conditions (e.g. MS, MND, stroke, concussion), mental health (e.g. anxiety or depression), learning disabilities, and cognitive difficulties (like attention, memory or organisation). But above all, you and your lived experience is my priority to understand. I hold space for wider issues that are affecting you, and am actively involved in reforming services with equality and diversity in mind.
Whilst I always work with evidence-based approaches, I try to make therapy as accessible as possible. I’m not a psychologist that puts in “rules” for what therapy should look like. If it feels right, our work can be outside a therapy room or amongst nature, and I can provide sensory objects or art supplies for us to play around with. I also ensure flexible and creative ways of working for your needs, including adapted communication styles and written/visual summaries of what we’ve covered.
